Our first screening has arrived. In collaboration with the incredible distributor and physical media purveyor Vinegar Syndrome, Culture Film Publication is presenting erotic horror/exploitation hidden gem The Black Room (1982) – incredibly rarely ever screened since its release. It is directed by Elly Kenner and Norman Thaddeus Vane, and stars Stephen Knight, Cassandra Gava, Jimmy Stathis, and Clara Perryman.
Sometimes considered a non-traditional vampire film, the film is a sleazy mystery in the Hollywood Hills centred around a ‘black room’ rented out for extramarital sex. Called ‘ahead of its time’ by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the film’s plot exists in between the remnants of the 1970’s sexual freedom and the cautionary tales (including the new weight of sexuality and transfusion/needle use from the AIDS crisis) that the early 1980’s would bring to American horror cinema.
“A serially unfaithful businessman rents a secret room in a Hollywood Hills mansion from a brother and sister, intending to use the space for his extramarital encounters. Unaware that his landlords are serial killers, he soon discovers that the women he brings to the room are being murdered as part of their own sinister scheme. A strange hybrid of psychological thriller, horror, and erotic exploitation, the film combines sexual obsession, voyeurism, and gruesome violence with a bizarre blood-transfusion plot.
